Grand Rapids has long been dedicated to environmental stewardship, with sustainability being one of the city’s six core values. This commitment is evident in various initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing community resilience.
Climate Action & Adaptation Plan
In August 2025, the City of Grand Rapids adopted its first Climate Action & Adaptation Plan (CAAP). This comprehensive roadmap outlines strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change impacts on public health, local ecosystems, infrastructure, and public spaces. The plan sets ambitious targets, including a 62.8% per capita reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. These goals align with the 2015 Paris Agreement’s commitment to limit global warming to below 2.7°F (1.5°C). The CAAP emphasizes equity, ensuring that climate solutions benefit all community members. E.H.Zero Initiative
Another significant effort is the E.H.Zero Initiative, launched in collaboration with the Michigan Green Building Collaborative and Urban Core Collective. This program focuses on transforming the design, construction, and operation of buildings and homes to support affordable housing, ensure clean air, and increase resilience to climate change. By co-creating policies and programs with the community, E.H.Zero aims to equitably decarbonize Grand Rapids’ residential and commercial buildings. Discover more about E.H.Zero.
Water Resource Recovery Facility Upgrades
In February 2026, Grand Rapids received over $1 million in federal funding to upgrade the UV disinfection system at the Water Resource Recovery Facility. This modernization enhances the system’s reliability, increases treatment capacity during peak weather events, and improves energy efficiency. The UV disinfection process uses light energy to inactivate bacteria and viruses without additional chemicals, making it an environmentally friendly technology. Read more about the upgrade.
Community Engagement and Education
Grand Rapids also emphasizes community engagement and education through initiatives like the Grand Rapids Environmental Education Network (GREEN). This partnership among local organizations aims to provide equitable access to environmental education and nature-based learning for all students. The goal is to foster environmental literacy and prepare young people to protect Michigan’s natural resources. Explore the GREEN initiative.
Through these concerted efforts, Grand Rapids continues to lead by example in environmental sustainability, striving to create a resilient, low-carbon city that centers equity in climate solutions.
