Grand Rapids has long been recognized for its dedication to environmental stewardship. The city’s Office of Sustainability, established in 2005, has evolved into a pivotal community partner, focusing on maintaining healthy buildings, promoting clean energy technologies, and reducing waste and pollution. Sustainability is one of the city’s six core values, guiding policies and programs to ensure a positive impact on the environment and community prosperity.
Climate Action & Adaptation Plan
In August 2025, Grand Rapids adopted its first Climate Action & Adaptation Plan (CAAP). This comprehensive roadmap outlines strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for climate change impacts on public health, local ecosystems, infrastructure, and public spaces. The plan envisions Grand Rapids as a resilient, low-carbon city that centers equity in climate solutions to ensure a safe and healthy community.
Equitable, Healthy, Zero Carbon Buildings (E.H.Zero) Initiative
The E.H.Zero Initiative is a collaborative effort between the City of Grand Rapids, the Michigan Green Building Collaborative, and the Urban Core Collective. This program aims to transform the design, construction, and operation of buildings to support affordable housing, ensure clean air, and increase resilience to climate change. By co-creating policies and programs with the community, E.H.Zero seeks to equitably decarbonize residential and commercial buildings in Grand Rapids.
Environmental Education and Community Engagement
Education plays a crucial role in Grand Rapids’ sustainability efforts. The Grand Rapids Environmental Education Network (GREEN), a partnership among local schools, foundations, and environmental organizations, strives to provide equitable access to environmental education and nature-based learning. Their goal is to ensure all young people are environmentally literate, connected to the natural world, and prepared to protect Michigan’s natural resources.
Infrastructure Improvements for Environmental Protection
Grand Rapids is also investing in infrastructure to enhance environmental protection. The city received over $1 million in federal funding to upgrade the UV disinfection system at the Water Resource Recovery Facility. This modernization aims to improve reliability, increase treatment capacity during peak weather events, and enhance energy efficiency, ultimately safeguarding public health and the Grand River ecosystem.
Through these initiatives and ongoing community engagement, Grand Rapids continues to demonstrate its commitment to a sustainable and resilient future.
