Grand Rapids is actively addressing critical community issues, focusing on housing affordability and public safety.
Housing Affordability Initiatives
Nonprofit organization Dwelling Place of Grand Rapids has received a $307,000 federal grant from NeighborWorks America. This funding aims to lower housing costs, expand local housing supply, and revitalize neighborhoods in West Michigan. NeighborWorks America, established by Congress in 1978, supports local solutions to affordable housing and community development challenges. Source
In contrast, the city’s Emerging Developer Grant Program has been paused due to exhausted funds. The program, designed to support new developers with predevelopment expenses, faced a $2.4 million backlog, leading to a temporary halt in applications until the next fiscal year. Source
Community Safety Efforts
The Grand Rapids Area Hoarding Taskforce (GRAHT) is a collaborative effort comprising public and private organizations. GRAHT aims to assist individuals living in cluttered environments by raising public awareness, providing education, and employing best practices to maintain safe living conditions. The task force’s mission is to enhance overall quality of life and ensure housing safety within the community. Source
These initiatives reflect Grand Rapids’ commitment to improving housing affordability and ensuring community safety through collaborative efforts and strategic funding.
